I’ve got nothing to do today but smile

I haven’t had anything to write about for a while now but i have been in the mood to write so here’s a short one for y’all.

There are certain things in this mixed up world of ours that, no matter how fowl a mood we are in, causes us to stop and smile.  It may just be for a few seconds, but there are a select group of people, places, and things that act as an instant mood enhancer.  It differs from person to person but we all have them.  For me: an impromptu game of peek-a-boo with a baby.  Every now and then I find myself on the bus, at the store, out doing whatever and come face to face with a drool factory and get suckered into trying to get a laugh out of them.  Maybe its just an extension of my desire to make people around me laugh or I just have a gland somewhere that pumps me full of estrogen when confronted with an infant.  Regardless the reason, I can’t help but be in a good mood when I get a laugh or a smile out of the kid.  Another example for me is the lack of sound during a snow fall.  Standing outside and having the snow deaden all extraneous noise, being able to enjoy the snow for a few moments that I will soon be cursing out when it comes time to shovel, is a sure fire happy generator.

Now I’m not saying all this because I thoroughly enjoy telling you embarrassing things about myself.  I thought I would point out how it really is the little things in life that can make all the difference.  A miserable commute in the rain can be fixed by a simple smile from a stranger.  A particularly hanious day can be salvaged by a old favorite coming on the radio.  We are complex creatures.  Even without the help of being bi-polar, we can go from one extreme mood to the opposite at the flip of a switch with the help of some happy accident or an unprovoked pick-me-up.  Try and think about that the next time you are down in the dumps or the world decides to use you as a punching bag.  Our moods are a result of the increases and decreases of chemicals in our brain.  The get released as a reaction to our evnvironment.  So when you think about it, happiness is just dopamine excretion away.  If you can figure out a way to get your brain to give you a shot of the good stuff when you need it, you are 10 steps ahead of the game.

All in all what I think im saying is don’t take things too serious when you are pissed off and/or bummin hard because its only temporary.  The bad, the good, and all the in between is always in transistion.  We try and keep up the good stuff for a lil longer and try and get past the bad a lil quicker but we need to keep in mind that, like ourselves and everyone and everything around us, its only here for a limited time only.  Bills suck but they eventually get paid off if you keep up the payments.  Having a cold is the worst but it will be gone in a few days.  And on the flip side, the good time never last so enjoy them while you can and try and think back on them when your in a drought.

************Side Note************

I don’t want to get political in here but I would like to say how happy it made me to see people get passionate about the election.  Regardless of who they supported, it was nice to see people from our “ME! ME! ME!” generation thinking about something other than Myspace and texting for a little while.  Record turnouts helped elect a president that wouldn’t have been able to drink from the same water fountain as me 50 years ago and help move our drug policies in this state in a more sane direction.  At the very least, it helped show people that paying attention to politics and exercising your right to vote can accomplish something every now and again.
